Forest Adaptation Planning and Practices - Adaptation in Action

This new course provides active, hands-on training for public, private, and tribal natural resource managers across the Midwest and Northeast who are interested in actively enhancing the ability of forests to cope with changing conditions. During this course, managers will learn how to incorporate climate change considerations into forest management planning and activities. Participants will use Forest Adaptation Resources: Climate Change Tools and Approaches to identify practical adaptation actions for their own real-world forest management projects. Learn more here.

This meeting is being hosted through a collaboration of the Northern Institute of  Applied Climate Science, the College of Menominee Nation, the CMN Center for First American Forestlands, and the US Forest Service.

These slides were presented at the 2013 Missouri Natural Resources Conference in Osage Beach, MO on February 1, 2013. The presentation gives and overview of the Central Hardwoods Climate Change Response Framework and some preliminary results from the vulnerability assessment.

These slides were presented to a joint meeting of the New England and New York Society of American Foresters in January 2013. The presentation describes current challenges for forest adaptation and provides some examples of how the Climate Change Response Framework is overcoming these challenges.

The Shared Landscapes Initiative is developing climate change adaptation projects in Wisconsin in order to provide real-world examples of forest management activities that help forests cope with changing conditions, while achieving a variety of forest management goals. This summary describes the purpose of adaptation projects and describes current participants. 

The Nature Conservancy’s Caroline Lake Preserve in northern Wisconsin provides a real-world example of how climate change adaptation can be incorporated into sustainable forest management. This document provides a summary of the project.

The Michigan Forester is the newsletter produced by the Michigan Chapter of the Society of American Foresters. This document summarizes the scope of the vulnerability assessment, its contents, and the vulnerability determination process. It also contains a progress report that is specific to the Central Appalachians' vulnerability assessment.

These slides were presented at the June 26 expert panel workshop for the Central Hardwoods Climate Change Response Framework project. They include maps and graphs showing past and projected changes in temperature and precipitation across the region.

Climate change is leading to direct and indirect impacts on forest tree species and ecosystems in northern Wisconsin. Land managers will need to prepare for and respond to these impacts, so we designed a workshop to identify forest management approaches that can enhance the ability of ecosystems in northern Wisconsin to cope with climate change and address how National Forests and other lands could be used to test these approaches. The workshop had three major themes: (1) adaptation of forest management to current and expected climate change, (2) forest management to support greenhouse gas mitigation, and (3) monitoring of climate change impacts and the effectiveness of mitigation and adaptation strategies. A group of nearly 60 experts in the fields of forest science, policy, and forest resource management identifi ed place-based management approaches and new research directions that addressed these major themes.

A strategic approach to addressing climate change centered on the scorecard elements has been launched regionally through the Eastern Region’s leadership and support, coupled with the science and coordination expertise of the Northern Research Station, Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry, and the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS). By strategically addressing each element in the Climate Change Scorecard on a regional level, we will help ensure that each National Forest and Prairie in the Region is able to meet or exceed the national goal of completing 7 out of 10 Scorecard elements by 2015. In the long-term, achieving these Scorecard elements will ensure that considerations of climate change are incorporated into land management plans and finally on-the ground actions.

An internal guidance document, Moving Forward is designed to link existing resources on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and set out an approach for moving forward on climate change adaptation in the near-term. This direction is a companion to the Forest Adaptation Resources and would build upon lessons learned through adaptation demonstration activities.
