Job Description Summary

Michigan Technological University College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science and the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS; www.niacs.org) are seeking a Climate Change Specialist (Research Scientist I) to synthesize and communicate scientific information on how a changing climate may affect terrestrial ecosystems of the Midwest. This position will review and synthesize literature to describe potential land management responses that may reduce climate risks while helping systems adapt to a changing climate. The position will work collaboratively with the NIACS team to create science-based information products, provide training, and technical assistance to natural resource managers working across a variety of regional ecosystems, including: forests, grasslands, and wetlands.

This position may require travel (up to 10% of time) to locations in the Upper Midwest.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

● Collaborate with research and management partners on climate adaptation and carbon-focused natural resources management projects.
● Work effectively with scientists and natural resource managers to synthesize research information, assess climate-related risks, and translate results into non-technical language for a variety of audiences.
● Create and adopt new and innovative ways to reach various audiences. Organize and facilitate trainings on the topic of climate change adaptation and mitigation practices.
● Create science delivery products and provide training to professional audiences, including outreach through print- and web-based media, presentations, workshops, briefings, brochures, and other activities.
● Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
● Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

 

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

Master’s degree in natural resources, ecology, environmental science, or related fields with an emphasis on ecosystem management or restoration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

OR

Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, ecology, environmental science, or related fields and two years experience in ecosystem management or restoration, natural resources management, or related fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

 

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

● Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication and presentation skills.
● Experience organizing, prioritizing, and managing multiple work projects and types of activities, while meeting and managing deadlines.
● Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to meet Michigan Tech’s vehicle use requirements.

 

Desirable Education and/or Experience

● Education or experience related to disturbance ecology, terrestrial ecosystem dynamics, climate change, and/or carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems
● Demonstrated experience in ecosystem restoration, or natural resources management in terrestrial ecosystems such as grasslands, wetlands, or forests
● Demonstrated experience related to ecosystem climate adaptation and/or carbon mitigation

 

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

● Knowledge of Midwest ecosystems
● Demonstrated proficiency using virtual meeting applications
● Applicant is located in the Midwest region (IA, IL, IN, MI, MO, MN, OH, WI)

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

● Demonstrated ability in compiling and synthesizing scientific information
● Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in both technical and non-technical terminology with a variety of audiences.
● Proficiency with computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
● Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
● Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
