Wisconsin <<return to state

Wisconsin hosts a diverse landscape, transitioning from prairies and oak savannahs in the south to hardwood and boreal forests in the north. The Laurentian Hardwood Forest region of northern Wisconsin covers over 24.4 million acres. Hardwood forests are common in this region, and white pine, paper birch, and hemlock are iconic tree species in this landscape.

The rest of the project planning team contributed additional ideas and refined the Proposed Action for the project (available below), which was released in July 2016 for a formal public comment period. There were not any formal objections to the project, and the National Forest is responding to public comments and completing their Environmental Analysis for a final decision in the winter of 2016-2017.

They partnered with Michigan Technological University, Wisconsin DNR, and Verso Paper Corporation on a successful application to the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Climate Adaptation Fund in 2014, which launched the implementation of this project. Planting and soil amendments have been completed, and monitoring is underway.

  • Expansive forests of large maple, oak, and birch trees are prized across the Northwoods for many reasons, including their beauty, their diversity, and their ability to provide valuable wood. Unfortunately, forests pests and disease pose increasingly large threats for these and other forests in the region. On the Menominee Indian Reservation in northern Wisconsin, foresters are working to respond to oak wilt and other threats, while also creating forests that will be better adapted to future conditions.
