From northern hardwoods to conifer lowlands to oak savannahs, Michigan has a wealth of forest communities that spread across its Upper and Lower Peninsulas. The Laurentian Hardwood Forest region of northern Michigan covers over 16.6 million acres, and the forests and other natural communities within this landscape provide a foundation for economic, cultural, and environmental well-being.

  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manages more than 4 million acres of forestland across the state. This ownership includes a diverse array of forest types, as well as several different kinds of management areas. In the western Upper Peninsula, aspen is the most abundant forest type on state land, with almost 250,000 acres (28% of the state’s ownership in the region). For this project, DNR staff addressed local site conditions that may predispose aspen to early mortality or low productivity due to climate change, specifically in the western Upper Peninsula.

  • The Ottawa National Forest developed the Interior Project to accomplish a variety of goals within a contiguous area. More information about the project as a whole is available on the Ottawa NF website. In conjunction with the overall Interior Project, Roger Powell (a forester on the Ottawa) used a single stand within the project to satisfy the requirements of the National Advanced Silviculture Program (NASP). This stand was selected for a detailed silviculture certification exam, which included considering how climate change might be accounted for while continuing to meet the management objectives outlined in the Forest Plan.

  • The Leelanau Conservancy is a non-profit land trust operating in the Leelanau Peninsula in northwestern lower Michigan. They focus on protecting forests, farms, lakeshores, and riparian areas through conservation easements and a portfolio of 23 established natural areas and preserves. For this project, Conservancy staff focused on climate change impacts and adaptation options for one particular forest preserve.

  • Huron Pines is a non-profit conservation organization that serves landowners in Michigan’s northeastern Lower Peninsula. Through their Private Lands Stewardship program, they work directly with private landowners to make effective management decisions focusing on a number of goals – restoration, invasive species control, wildlife habitat enhancement, forest health improvement, and many more. In this project, Huron Pines staff are providing climate change adaptation recommendations to a private landowner as part of a complex restoration and agricultural project.

  • The Hiawatha National Forest manages a diverse array of forest types across Michigan’s eastern Upper Peninsula. Many red pine plantations were established across the forest from the 1930s to the 1960s. East Red Pine 3 Project activities include commercial thinning of about 4,000 acres of red pine, planting white pine on about 1,200 acres, and conducting prescribed burns on about 500 acres.   • Sugar maple is a important species for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC), both economically and culturally. KBIC is pursuing this adaptation project to demonstrate a proactive approach to maintain sugar maple as a dominant species within the reservation landscape in response to climate change. Management will include a group selection harvest to create gaps throughout the stand. After harvest, seeds collected from sugar maple in different areas throughout its natural range (from Maine down the Appalachian Mts to Illinois) will be germinated and planted within the gaps. The project will be designed and monitored as a scientific study. KBIC forestry and natural resources staff developed this project using the Adaptation Workbook at the Forest Adaptation Planning and Practices training in August 2013.

  • The Pori Junction Vegetative Management Project is a multiple resources management project being proposed by the Ottawa National Forest that includes timber, wildlife, and riparian projects. It is primarily designed to promote a healthy and resilient forest ecosystem based on goals and objectives of the Ottawa National Forest Land and Resources Management Plan. This project will help the project team consider what kind of vegetation management actions might also help the forests and ecosystems adapt to future changes and respond to ecosystem vulnerabilities. This project will also provide a real-world example of how forest management can enhance adaptation to climate change.
