Vermont <<return to state

The entire state of Vermont is within the New England Framework. Vermont is composed of three Ecological Provinces, the Northeastern Mixed Forest (211), Eastern Broadleaf Forest (221), and the Adirondack-New England Mixed Forest (M211). Understanding and managing the impacts of climate change on New England’s diverse forests will help us maintain their many benefits for years to come.

Use the menu above to explore Partnerships, Vulnerability Assessments, Forest Adaptation Resources, and Demonstration Projects in Vermont or return to the New England Climate Change Response Framework.

Please contact Maria Janowiak to learn more about this effort.

Demonstration Projects

  • Green Mountain National Forest staff considered climate change effects and possible adaptation actions for a large integrated resource project.

  • The Vermont Land Trust has updated the forest management plan for a on a 72-acre property in Starksboro that is currently enrolled in Vermont's Use Value Appraisal Program. A timber harvest is also planned.

  • The NorthWoods Stewardship Center has a mission of “connecting people and place through science, education and action.” Conservation, land management and education programs are concentrated in northeastern Vermont at the NorthWoods Stewardship Center's working forest and extend throughout New England. This project was intended to revisit the 2015 forest management plan and decide if any modifications should be made in regard to climate change adaptation.

  • Trout Unlimited New England is working with partners to implement a series of actions to help riparian forests and coldwater streams adapt to climate change.

  • Audubon Vermont and the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation developed the innovative Foresters for the Birds project, which works to maintain working forests and bird habitat by integrating the practices of timber and songbird habitat management. More recently, Audubon Vermont has been looking at its how its efforts to promote Silviculture with Birds in Mind can also help adapt forests to changing conditions.

  • The Long-Range Management Plan is being revised and will include climate change adaptation considerations. Managers are currently assessing the current condition of the management area as a first step to updating the Long-Range Management Plan. After these assessments are completed, management actions will be identified that help to meet management goals while also helping to adapt forests to changing climate conditions.

  • Vermont’s landscape contains a diversity of forest types, which provide important wildlife habitat. Just as trees and forests are likely altered as a result of a changing climate, many wildlife species will also be affected. This project considers how anticipated changes in climate may affect wildlife habitat across nearly 5,000 acres of forest and wetland.

  • A climate change vulnerability assessment was developed for the Park's forests and used to inform forest management activities.

  • Staff from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources are currently working to update the Park’s management plan, which includes a large amount of public input because of the park’s popularity.

  • Okemo State Forest, 8,000 acres in the green mountains of Vermont just west of Ludlow Village, is in in the first stage of planning for an updated 20- year Long-Range Management Plan. This plan will incorporate information about the effects of climate change on local forests.

  • More than two-thirds of Vermont’s forest land is privately owned, making it important to reach out to individual and family forest owners about the potential effects of climate change on their forest lands and ways to help forests adapt to changing conditions. This project is working with a group of 12 landowners to help integrate climate change considerations into their management. Additionally, this project is one of two demonstration locations looking at the effects of climate change on forest bird habitats.

  • Warmer, shorter winters are reducing the winter logging season, and over time, it is likely that more logging will need to occur in the summer under less favorable conditions. The Vermont Land Trust harvested one area in summer to better understand how warmer winter conditions could affect logging operations and costs.
