Massachusetts <<return to state

The entire state of Massachusetts is within the New England Framework. Massachusetts is composed of two Ecological Provinces, the Eastern Broadleaf Forest (221), and the Adirondack-New England Mixed Forest (M211). Understanding and managing the impacts of climate change on New England’s diverse forests will help us maintain their many benefits for years to come.

Use the menu above to explore Partnerships, Vulnerability Assessments, Forest Adaptation Resources, and Demonstration Projects in Massachusetts or return to the New England Climate Change Response Framework.

Please contact Maria Janowiak to learn more about this effort.

Demonstration Projects

  • The Trustees are working with a consulting forester to develop a ten-year forest stewardship plan for Notchview Reservation that will incorporate climate change adaptation as one component of management.

  • The City has completed a comprehensive Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and is developing a Climate Change Preparedness and Resilience Plan. The urban forest is viewed as both a resource with vulnerabilities to climate change and an asset in helping the community manage the impacts of climate change.

  • The Franklin Land Trust is working with Trout Unlimited and other partners to implement a series of actions to help riparian forests and coldwater streams adapt to climate change.

  • Staff from the Forestry Division of the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation used the Adaptation Workbook to consider climate change risks and management opportunities for timber sale on state forest land. This project focused on stream crossings on the main access road used for forest management activities.

  • The Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary is a privately-owned wildlife refuge with over 8,000 acres of upland forest and aquatic habitats located on the border of south central Massachusetts and northeastern Connecticut. The Sanctuary is implementing actions to maintain forest habitats under a changing climate and sharing those experiences with other landowners through the MassConn Sustainable Forest Partnership.
