West Virginia <<return to state

The entire state of West Virginia is within the Central Appalachians Framework. The highly diverse mountainous terrain is more than three-quarters covered by forest. Oak and hickory can be found throughout the state, while red spruce, balsam fir, and northern hardwoods thrive at higher elevations. Major rivers-including the Ohio, Monongahela, Kanawha, and Potomac–support rich bottomland pin oak forests that are associated with unique communities at varying elevations. Understanding and managing the impacts of climate change on the Central Appalachians’ diverse forests will help us maintain their many benefits.

A key step to understanding the potential impacts of climate change in the Central Appalachians Region is conducting a vulnerability assessment. The Central Appalachians Forest Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment (2015) is now available online as a General Technical Report. For more information, contact Patricia (Butler) Leopold.
