Central Appalachians Forest Adaptation Resources
Information on the vulnerability of forest ecosystems to climate change can be integrated into management decisions. Forest Adaptation Resources: Climate Change Tools and Approaches for Land Managers will provide tools and approaches for land managers to achieve this goal. A version of this document has already been developed for northern Wisconsin. We are currently revising the FAR document to increase the availability and usability of this tool across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast.
The expanded Forest Adaptation Resources will:
- Identify adaptation strategies and approaches that are relevant to Central Appalachians ecosystems.
- Utilize expert review from our local partners to determine which adaptation strategies and approaches are feasible in the Central Appalachians region.
- Demonstrate how adaptation tactics can be developed for local management situations using case studies.
The expanded version of Forest Adaptation Resources is not yet available. Learn more about how these resources fit into the Framework here.

Climate Change Science Applications and Needs in Forest Ecosystem Management: A Workshop Organized as Part of the Northern Wisconsin Climate Change Response Framework Project
Climate change is leading to direct and indirect impacts on forest tree species and ecosystems in northern Wisconsin. Land managers will need to prepare for and respond to these impacts, so we designed a workshop to identify forest management approaches that can enhance the ability of ecosystems in northern Wisconsin to cope with climate change and address how National Forests and other lands could be used to test these approaches. The workshop had three major themes: (1) adaptation of forest management to current and expected climate change, (2) forest management to support greenhouse gas mitigation, and (3) monitoring of climate change impacts and the effectiveness of mitigation and adaptation strategies. A group of nearly 60 experts in the fields of forest science, policy, and forest resource management identifi ed place-based management approaches and new research directions that addressed these major themes.
This US Forest Service General Technical Report summarizes the workshop outcomes and can be downloaded here.

Forest Adaptation Resources: Climate Change Tools and Approaches for Land Managers
Abstract: The forests of northern Wisconsin, a defining feature of the region's landscape, are expected to undergo numerous changes in response to the changing climate. This document provides a collection of resources designed to help forest managers incorporate climate change considerations into management and devise adaptation tactics. It was developed in northern Wisconsin as part of the Northwoods Climate Change Response Framework project and contains information from assessments, partnership efforts, workshops, and collaborative work between scientists and managers. The four interrelated chapters include: (1) a description of the overarching Climate Change Response Framework, a landscape-scale conservation approach also being expanded to other landscapes; (2) a "menu" of adaptation strategies and approaches that are directly relevant to forests in northern Wisconsin; (3) a workbook process to help incorporate climate change considerations into forest management planning and to assist land managers in developing groundlevel climate adaptation tactics for forest ecosystems; and (4) two illustrations that provide examples of how these resources can be used in real-world situations. The ideas, tools, and resources presented in the different chapters are intended to inform and support the existing decisionmaking processes of multiple organizations with diverse management goals.

The Eastern Region's Approach to Climate Change Response and the Performance Scorecard
A strategic approach to addressing climate change centered on the scorecard elements has been launched regionally through the Eastern Region’s leadership and support, coupled with the science and coordination expertise of the Northern Research Station, Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry, and the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS). By strategically addressing each element in the Climate Change Scorecard on a regional level, we will help ensure that each National Forest and Prairie in the Region is able to meet or exceed the national goal of completing 7 out of 10 Scorecard elements by 2015. In the long-term, achieving these Scorecard elements will ensure that considerations of climate change are incorporated into land management plans and finally on-the ground actions.

Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis
Abstract: The forests of northern Wisconsin will likely experience dramatic changes over the next 100 years as a result of climate change. This assessment evaluates key forest ecosystem vulnerabilities to climate change across northern Wisconsin under a range of future climate scenarios. Warmer temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns are expected to influence ecosystem drivers and increase stressors, including more frequent disturbances and increased amount or severity of pests and diseases. Forest ecosystems will continue to adapt to changing conditions. Identifying vulnerable species and forests can help landowners, managers, regulators, and policymakers establish priorities for management and monitoring.
This US Forest Service General Technical Report synthesizes information and assesses forest ecosystem vulnerabilities in northern Wisconsin. View report here.
